PROJECT 2B: STREET INTERVENTION
Introduction
In social science, the term built environment, or built world, refers to the human-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings to parks. It has been defined as "the human-made space in which people live, work, and recreate on a day-to-day basis. The "built environment” encompasses places and spaces created or modified by people including buildings, parks, and transportation systems.
Roof, K; Oleru N. (2008). "Public Health: Seattle and King County's Push for the Built Environment". J Environ Health. 75: 24–27.
“The built environment provides the setting and backdrop by which we live our lives, and impacts on our senses, our emotions, participation in physical activity and community life, our sense of community, and general wellbeing. Meanings are generated by buildings and spaces, which we ‘read’ as we pass through them. Places are created and shaped by those in control of resources and with certain interests, which affects our degree of access to, and the way we use, those spaces.”( Iain, 2000)
Objectives
The objectives of this project is to extend knowledge of the built environment at its basic unit, form and function. Besides, we need to understand the interrelation between built environment and its user and to question, analyse and articulate the impact by the built environment.
Tasks
I need to construct ideas on street intervention based on the conducted site study. Example of street intervention include street installations, street arts, streets facilities and etc. In relation to this intervention, i need to understand the site potential/issues at first. As a group, we are assigned to a site in KL which is BRICKFILED and therefore, we are to conduct a site study where an investigation is carried out through site observation. We are then to prepare a site inventory (data collection) and evaluation of the site and street. From the chosen site, we need to select a street which is 100m-200m distance, not necessary to be a long stretc, to conduct our site investigation. We need to select 2 options and to discuss with our lecturer during tutorial session before going to the site and finally we finalize our street as JALAN THAMBIPILLAY. We are to take a train to our site through KL’s rail transit network. Before going on the trip, we need to conduct a pre-visit through online platform using 3D street view, "Google Earth". We need to capture the tangible and intangible built elements in our site through photograph, interview, video recording etc. We also need to be critical when conducting our site study.
Work Progress
The photos and videos below show our progress on this project.

Final outcomes
Having fun on the other street!

Showing our progress to the lecturers.
The classroom is so messy because of us..

We only have two days left! Watching the sunrise..
Making fun of our friend's name, FABIAN!

One day to go! Just sleep wherever you are!

Reflection and TGC

Throughout this project, i understand the importance of teamwork. As a group, we must work together as a team in order to solve any problem we faced. Other than that, i learned to be a more observant person to observe more about the environment and the matters that happen around us and also analyse them by thinking critically so that many questions and problems will be solve automatically. Although we were tired, it was also a fun and interesting project for us to experience.
