PROJECT 2A: MY "X" HOMETOWN

Introduction

In social science, the term built environment, or built world, refers to the human-made surroundings that provide the setting for human activity, ranging in scale from buildings to parks. It has been defined as "the human-made space in which people live, work, and recreate on a day-to-day basis. The "built environment” encompasses places and spaces created or modified by people including buildings, parks, and transportation systems.

Roof, K; Oleru N. (2008). "Public Health: Seattle and King County's Push for the Built Environment". J Environ Health. 75: 24–27.

“The built environment provides the setting and backdrop by which we live our lives, and impacts on our senses, our emotions, participation in physical activity and community life, our sense of community, and general wellbeing. Meanings are generated by buildings and spaces, which we ‘read’ as we pass through them. Places are created and shaped by those in control of resources and with certain interests, which affects our degree of access to, and the way we use, those spaces.”( Iain, 2000)

Objectives

The objectives of this project is to extend knowledge of the built environment at its basic unit, form and function. Besides, we need to understand the interrelation between built environment and its user and to question, analyse and articulate the impact by the built environment.

Tasks

From the lecture and discussion on Built Environment, i need to recall, study and to visually revisit my hometown to visualise the ambience/environment, built components, social and culture through tangible and intangible components. I need to choose a town or city of your origin/where you came from and to choose a specific area to study in detail.

First, i need to study the background and the history of the township, the significance elements/components, the accessibility and other relevant data of the township. I will need to illustrate a map of your township upon as the main reference.

Secondly, i need to zoom in my selected areas of my township and to elaborate the built components in detail through tangible and intangible components.

Thirdly, i need to identify your favourite/sentimental part of my area and to discuss about the tangible and intangible elements

Lastly, i need to describe and visualise what would i like to change/improve in your township and justify why.

Work Progress

The photo and videos below show my progress on this project.

Working on it!

Too Strees!

Final outcomes

I named my hometown as "MY ORIGIN"!

Reflection and TGC

Throughout this assignment, i learned to identify and to describe the elements or components of built environment. Moreover, i have learned to analyse the function of the elements in built environment in the city setting and to initiate ideas on built environment through observation, data collection, evaluation and deliver them by using different media, tools and techniques.
